We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer – Full Stack PHP/Symfony to help deliver innovative, cloud-based solutions that enhance institutional effectiveness for education and healthcare organizations.
You’ll be joining our client, a UK-based company that provides platforms designed to improve performance management, workload planning, and staff engagement. The suite of products supports universities and healthcare providers in streamlining operations, fostering collaboration, and enabling data-driven decision-making.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining scalable, secure, and high-quality software solutions using PHP, Symfony, React, and related technologies. This role requires strong hands-on engineering capability, sound technical judgment, Agile delivery discipline, and the ability to use AI-assisted coding tools responsibly to improve development productivity and code quality.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, customize, and maintain scalable full-stack applications using PHP, Symfony, API Platform, React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
Build secure, maintainable, and high-performing backend services, RESTful APIs, microservices, and frontend components.
Translate product and technical requirements into clear technical tasks and reliable software solutions.
Contribute to application architecture, technical design discussions, and implementation planning.
Write clean, maintainable, testable, and well-documented code following coding standards and engineering best practices.
Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to improve code quality, maintainability, performance, and security.
Work closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, QA Engineers, Designers, DevOps, and other engineering team members to deliver business-aligned solutions.
Participate actively in Agile delivery activities, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
Support accurate estimation, progress updates, risk identification, and timely escalation of blockers.
Use AI-assisted coding tools responsibly for code generation, refactoring, debugging, test case generation, documentation, troubleshooting, and technical analysis.
Review, validate, and improve AI-generated outputs to ensure they meet required standards for quality, security, performance, maintainability, and compliance.
Develop and maintain unit tests, integration tests, and other quality checks to support reliable delivery.
Support cloud-based deployments and application delivery using AWS and related DevOps practices.
Work with PostgreSQL databases, including database design, query optimization, and performance tuning.
Troubleshoot technical issues, resolve defects, and support development, testing, deployment, and post-production activities.
Create and maintain technical documentation, implementation notes, and knowledge-sharing materials.
Support junior and mid-level developers through technical guidance, code review feedback, and knowledge sharing.
What We Expect
Minimum of 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience.
Strong proficiency in PHP with experience building and maintaining enterprise-grade applications.
Hands-on experience with Symfony Framework and API Platform.
Strong full-stack development experience, including backend development with PHP/Symfony and frontend development with React.
Strong proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
Experience designing, developing, and consuming RESTful APIs and microservices.
Experience with AWS cloud services and cloud-based application deployment.
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and RabbitMQ.
Database design and development experience with PostgreSQL, including query optimization and performance tuning.
Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software development lifecycle.
Good understanding of application architecture, system design, SOLID principles, design patterns, and industry best practices.
Familiarity with architectural patterns such as REST APIs, microservices, and serverless architectures.
Experience participating in code reviews and following coding standards and quality guidelines.
Strong understanding of application security, performance optimization, scalability, reliability, and maintainability considerations.
Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery teams.
Ability to participate effectively in sprint planning, estimation, daily stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives, and delivery tracking.
Ability to work closely with overseas clients, distributed teams, and cross-functional project teams.
Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar tools.
Ability to use AI coding tools responsibly while reviewing, validating, and improving AI-generated code before implementation.
Ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions within assigned areas, and escalate risks or blockers early.
Good communication, problem-solving, ownership, and collaboration skills.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
